Poetry Club + GratiTuesday- Healthy Friendships

Good morning lovelies!

Guess what I did today?  I forgot my key to get into my gym!  It is a 24/7 gym, and so no one is there at 4:45 when I arrive and I had no key to get in.  I texted my gym partner but she didn’t answer and I waited 15 minutes and figured she slept in or something (she was there but didn’t get my text).

So, I drove all the way back home and went downstairs and hopped on the treadmill instead.  I did a 60 minute run and a 20 minute walk.  It felt amazing- but I DID end up getting two little gym partners.

Horrible quality- as a light has burnt out in the gym!

They were cute and just played while I finished up my run.  Then, of course, they wanted their own turn before going upstairs to get ready for the day.

Today, I’m starting exam review with my English students.  And this evening is the Awards Night.  It’s semi-formal, so I have to dig out the heels and dust them off…literally.  I’m doing a speech, which I’m prepared and excited for….but as always, in front of peers, colleagues, students and parents….it can be daunting!

Yesterday,  I had my final meeting with my poetry club.  I have a group of about 10 girls who meet with me weekly and we write poetry, share poetry, and gossip.  I just love these students and I’m so happy they continued this with me throughout the year (it started in their grade 9 year) and so, I got them each a new journal and gel pen from Chapters.  This way, they will be motivated to continue writing over the summer months.

And one of the girls had gotten her mother to drop off a Kombucha for me- so sweet!

After school, I got my girls and they had had their faces painted at daycare.  I needed to go to Superstore to pick up a few essentials (as I was away for the weekend) and so I brought two little kitties along with me.

Who remembers doing this as a kid???  I do!!

Then we got home and had supper- theirs (Hamburger soup and a fruit bowl for dessert):

Ours (Salad and Quinoa):

A bit later, I was headed to my bedroom when I saw this scene on the couch!  I just LOVE it when they love on each other!

GratiTuesday- Your Tribe!

Question to Ponder- who have you been enjoying being around lately and why?

This is such an interesting question as I recently saw someone post a picture of their friends on a social media site and the quote underneath read something like- hang out with those who look like your future and not your past.

And it made me really think- as I had just returned from my 17th year doing canoe school with some of my favourite people.  And canoe school always lifts my spirit and feeds my soul.

I’m truly blessed, as these people ARE my future AND are my past.  Like Ralph Waldo Emmerson said, “It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.”  Haha, and that couldn’t be more true with these folks.  They know the TRUEST TRUTH of who I am at my core and they still love me for it.  We have been through so much- Matt’s accidents, graduations, showers, weddings, babies, breakups, deaths of loved ones, etc., and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.  There is something special about friendships that have tested time and still hold strong.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.   I had put this quote in my blog a few weeks back:

I have some AMAZING friends that I’ve only known for ten years, some even less.  But it doesn’t matter, because we connected on a deep level immediately.

I think that true friendship is about how you feel when you are with people.  If you feel good, and happy and true and safe, that’s friendship.  If you feel bad about yourself or insecure or sad- then there is an issue.  It is about being with those who feed your soul and lift your spirit, and avoiding those who dampen your spirit and rob your soul.

Letting go of toxic people can help you grow as a person.  I’ve recently had to shed some layers of people and have seen so much growth in myself since and have seen so many positive opportunities and things enter my life because of it.  It is empowering and also cleansing.

Who do you feel your most true self with?  Who makes you feel safe?

And that’s it for today!  Matt is going to be blogging on Thursday- so stay tuned for that!

Namaste

  1. Funny that you wrote of this tonight. I just said to Chris the other day that if you told me 5 years ago that my circle of friends was going to drastically change I never would have believed you. Fast foward and to today and the choices of others made me make hard choices that made my circle smaller and smaller.
    No looking back though!!
